                                                             What is PALS?

PALS stands for Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening. It is an informal test used across the State of Virginia and is administered in our school to children in grades K-3. PALS was developed on the premise that substantial research has identified several key variables that help to identify children who are most likely to experience difficulty with reading achievement. The predictors included on the test are phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, letter-sound knowledge, and early literacy skills like phonetic spelling and word recognition. Children identified as at risk are provided with an additional twenty to thirty minutes per day of effective intervention. Research has shown that intervention in the early primary grades can prevent reading deficiencies in the later grades.

Hi! I am Mrs. Pasternak, the reading specialist at Lake Ridge Elementary.  The reading program at LRES is designed to support parents, teachers, and students.  The goal of our program is to create a community of readers and writers.  Reading programs serve students and teachers at all grade levels and reach out to parents through family reading nights and our weekly newsletter the "Head Lions".

Current research emphasizes the importance of daily reading to improve reading skills and create children with a love for literature.  See the link to Easy Chapter Books.

Reading Resource Program

Lake Ridge Elementary School has a program that allows me to go into classrooms and work with teachers in grades K-5.  In some classes I co-teach reading groups.  At other times,  I  am available to model ways to implement the county's Balanced Literacy Program or to work with the classroom teacher as we try out new strategies and techniques.  This is an exciting opportunity for me to get to know many more children and to learn with teachers and students.  I look forward to spending this time in classrooms.

Our school continues to have a small-group, pullout reading program that provides additional time for students to practice stategies they are learning in the classroom.  Students in this program meet with me twice a week for up to 45 minutes each session.  Groups are flexible and formed to meet a student's learning needs.
